Every bounce house party in Acadiana starts the same way: barefoot kids sprinting across the grass before the blower is even unplugged. That is exactly why fire ants and bounce house rentals deserve a conversation before your party day, not after. South Louisiana carries some of the heaviest red imported fire ant pressure in the country, and one flat, hard-to-see mound in the wrong spot can turn a birthday party into an ice-pack afternoon. The good news is that this is one of the easiest party problems to prevent, and early fall is the best window all year to do it. Why Fire Ants Are a Bigger Deal for Bounce House Parties
A bounce house changes how your yard gets used. Instead of kids scattered across the whole lawn, you get twenty of them funneled through one entrance, shoes off, standing on the same three square feet of grass for two hours. If there is a mound near that entrance, it will get found.
Fire ants make setup harder for our crew, too. Anchoring stakes drive straight into the soil, and a disturbed mound sends ants up the stakes, onto the tarp, and eventually onto the vinyl. Getting them off means soaking everything down, which nobody wants an hour before guests arrive.
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology notes that in moist clay soil like ours mounds can rise up to 18 inches, but in dry sandy soil they can be completely flat. Fire ants also do not clear the vegetation around their nests, so a mound sitting in thick St. Augustine grass can be invisible from standing height. That is the one that gets stepped on.
The Best Time to Treat Is Weeks Before the Party
Here is the single most useful thing in this article: bait does not work overnight. According to the LSU AgCenter, a broadcast bait eliminates most of the mounds in a treated area, typically 90 to 95 percent, and holds that for six to eighteen months. But it works by being carried back to the queen, so it takes weeks, not hours.
LSU AgCenter recommends broadcasting bait in April and again in October, and October is the one Acadiana parents should circle. Colonies are foraging hard to stock up for winter, which makes them especially eager to take bait. If you have a fall festival or a November birthday on the calendar, treating in the next few weeks is close to ideal timing.
Two practical notes from their guidance: broadcast over the whole yard rather than chasing individual mounds, and put bait down on dry ground 24 to 48 hours before any expected rain. Your Pre-Party Yard Walkthrough
Do this the day before delivery, in good light, wearing closed-toe shoes. It takes about ten minutes.
- Scuff-walk the setup footprint. Loose, fluffy soil that gives underfoot is a mound even when there is no visible dome.
- Check the entrance zone hardest. That is where bare feet stand longest. Give yourself a buffer beyond the unit footprint.
- Look along every hard edge. Sidewalks, driveway seams, patio slabs, AC pads and fence lines are where we find them most.
- Inspect anything sitting still. Kiddie pools, trampoline mats, tarps, bagged mulch and forgotten toys are prime real estate.
- Mark what you find. A golf tee beats trying to remember, and it lets your delivery crew shift the layout.
If you find mounds inside the footprint and the party is imminent, move the setup rather than treat and hope. We would much rather reposition an inflatable ten feet than set it on a nest, so call us before delivery day and we will plan around it.
Party-Day Habits That Keep Ants Out of the Fun
- Keep shoes on until kids reach the tarp. The walk from the back door is where most stings happen, not inside the unit.
- Put food on tables, not blankets. A dropped cupcake in the grass pulls foragers in within minutes.
- Set the shoe pile on the tarp. Ants will happily crawl into shoes left sitting in the grass.
- Scuff-walk once more before guests arrive. Mounds appear fast after a rain, and September in Acadiana rains often.
If Someone Does Get Stung
Most stings are painful but not dangerous. The AAAAI describes the standard course: wash with soap and water, apply a cold compress, and leave the blister that forms alone. It looks like it should be drained, but it is sterile and heals fastest untouched.
What matters is knowing the difference between a normal sting and a reaction that needs help. Anaphylaxis involves more than one part of the body and can include hives spreading beyond the sting, swelling of the throat or tongue, trouble breathing or swallowing, dizziness or nausea, usually beginning within a couple of hours. That is an emergency. Call 911.

Does the tarp under the bounce house keep ants out?

Do water slides attract or repel fire ants?
Neither, exactly. Running water disrupts nests right where it lands, but soggy ground can push a colony toward drier, higher soil nearby. Plan your hose route, then check the high ground in your yard the morning of your water slide rental.
